Bolivia, andean cereal producer

When the Spanish Conquerors reached the Andes, they found expert farmers living in harmony with nature, this continues to be important. The Quechua and Aymara people have not lost their identity, culture, traditions or knowledge. In many regions our 2000 year old agricultural tradition is still practiced and virtually unchanged. The principles of ecological agriculture such as: land rotation systems, selection of varieties, composting, long term agricultural planning and community management are deep rooted practices in the entire Andean region.

Bolivia is an ideal country to develop a widespread system of ecological agriculture as it contains most of the ecosystems spread over 800 to 5000m over sea level. The altitude allows for the production of an extensive variety of cultivars but limits the scale so that it remains sustainable. Much of the potential of this land remains untapped as, only 6% of the arable land is used permanently, leaving 94% almost intact.

Due to the growing world demand for organic products, we firmly believe the agricultural future of Bolivia needs to be in sustainable production and that, together with the development of industries in this domain it will lead to important opportunities for our developing country.
